Raw techie desire

Filed under: Uncategorized — dave @ 4:22 pm

I’m a techie, i do not apologize for that. I bought a server over the summer on a whim, i’ve overhauled computers in four states (California, Texas, Washington and the last one is a funny story you can ask my future roommate about). Since my first computer in December of 2002 i’ve averaged more than 1 new computer a year. But in all of this i don’t think i’ve ever seen anything that made me go “OOOOH I WANT THAT” quite as much as the new Apple Mini Having seen the really awesome Dell 19″ LCD at the Stone office, if there is another day when Dell makes those stupid cheap again, my bank account may take a hit.

Lame blog thingie

Filed under: Uncategorized — dave @ 7:18 pm

Haven’t posted in a while. Was reading Alfonso’s blog and he talked about some johari window blog thing. Jim mentioned it’s inverse the nohari. I’m not going to go into the psych stuff about it because GIYF. Anyway i checked it out, and now you can click from a list of negative attributes about why i suck. (ooh that sounded really emo). My Nohari Thingie. And also here’s a link to the positive list Johari Thingie. I would highly suggest not going there, because let’s face it my ego is too big as it is.

Online Calendaring

Check out airset.com i just registered, but it looks pretty sweet. IN other news, apparently Groove, the office product that stone is obsessed with got bought by MSFT in april and will be one of the programs in Office 2007. (By calling it Office 2007, microsoft is implicitly acknowledging that their development cycle is longer than the car industry’s, think about that)

Valentine’s Day Comm Group

Filed under: Uncategorized — dave @ 6:17 pm

Valentine’s day is on a tuesday this year. So is our community group. It looks like the group is going to consist of me and Brandon sitting around together drinking Coke. How did 2 such chronically single juniors get stuck leading a group of freshman that all manage to have girlfriends? *shakes fist at the wall*

Oh well, it could be worse. For all you out there who are trying to be more concerned about midterms than the opposite sex, i’ll drink one for you.

i’m not bitter, i’m undercaffeinated

Flat Tires

Filed under: Uncategorized — dave @ 9:29 pm

My rear tire on my bike went flat at some point, and i didn’t get around to fixing it because i didn’t have the necessary stuff. This led to my bike being outside completely neglected for about 2 months now. I went to Bicycle Sports Shop and got a patch kit, fixed the bike and rode it to school, but more has to happen, cuz my chain and shifter lines have rust on them. Upon returning to my bike 5 hours after riding it to campus i discovered the back tire had lost quite a bit of pressure and my front tire was completely flat. I pumped them up enough to get home and the bike will probably now be neglected until the weekend.

I can’t help but think the bike is symbolic for my large life. I tend to basically do the bare minimum in many of the aspects of my life, ruthlessly purging things that i can get away without doing in order to fill my time with….nothing. Whenever I look at the things that i need/should do i’m boggled by the list, and yet i seem to continue skating along. The tires are always inflated enough to make it home, but the chain is rusty and likely to stay that way for a while.

My sister has a link to Paul Graham’s essays on her AIM profile. I’m so proud. She’s got the diligence that i lack, and hopefully she’ll realize that her potential far exceeds mine for that fact alone.

That being said, i really want to go to a parent-teacher conference someday for a son who is too bored in class to live up to his potential.

I guess i should go crank out the 3-5 page paper that’s due tomorrow. Blech.

Interviews

Filed under: Uncategorized — dave @ 1:43 pm

I used to mildly regret my decision to accept microsoft’s offer back in last semester because it necessitated forgoing all opportunities this semester. I no longer regret that decision. I’ve already gotten 8 (*2 because they have two emails for me apparently) e-mails telling me that i’m eligible for interviews. My favorite of course being Amazon.com. Oh well.

Academics are somewhat less stressful when not in any CS classes. It’s not that MIS classes are necessarily easy, just that i’m still very much in the phase where 80% of the difficulty for students is figureing out how to think in a computer oriented way, which is about the only mode i’ve thought in for a few years now. Which leaves a communication studies class which has yet to progress to what Mad Dog taught me freshman year at Jesuit. And a math class that i really need to regain my bearings in. It’s not that i’m lost so much as i’ve slacked a bit more than is prudent. I’m now enrolled at ACC as well for Government, i predict that it will not be challenging.

Work is good, the server situation has stabilized (hooray for blogging without context) and the fate of their IT situation after the move is up in the air, which makes all current projects interesting to prioritize.

Ministry is complicated, I need to figure out how/where to best spend my time. i’m excited about our community group.

Train makes me smile, Queen makes me grin.

I’m off to ACM officer retreat. Out

Running

Filed under: Uncategorized — dave @ 9:54 pm

I’m really getting tired of these late night runs.

Number of people who should be able to understand that: 2 (Matt and Ross) maybe 3 (Marcoux)

You might be a college student if…

Filed under: Uncategorized — dave @ 10:23 pm

..you go to HEB a little after midnight and your shopping list consists of walnuts, eggs, mayonaise and iced tea.

You’re definitely a college student if it’s the second time in as many nights that you’ve been at the grocery store after midnight.
